Phoenix Team Kenya - 8th Day

After a long journey from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, we settled down in the Ibis Hotel. Mr Lopez was very pleased that the hotel was right next to a 3 floor high ICT store. We then went to the Conrad Hotel, headquarters of the Maclaren F1 team where we were treated to a selection of oriental food and desserts by the swimming-pool. We collected our GP tickets and we were going back to the hotel after lunch when we got a call to enter the paddocks area. It is just like on tv really. We saw Bernie Ecclestone having a chat with BBC commentator Edie Jordan. It was very busy as the time for practice 1 had started. We were allowed into the Lotus Team garage were we observed the action and listened to their team radio. It was much noisier than we thought.
Just as we were leaving we had a chance to greet Bernie Ecclestone, F1 boss.

We then walked all the way to our sitting area to watch the second practice run. We were absolutely exhausted by the end of the day and Mr Lopez told us that we could sleep till 10am and then go to breakfast and eat as much as we wanted.

Phoenix Team Kenya - 7th Day

Today we woke up nice and early to pack and get ready for an exciting day ahead of us. We went to the Sunway Lagoon in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) where it was packed with people there. We went on loads of rides and our favourite was the water rapids and an amazing wave pool. They were loads of parks
- wildlife park
- water park
- extreme park
- amusement park
As soon as we got back to the hotel we immidiately started packing for what was a long and tiring soon to come day ahead of us. We went to bed at 8:30 and woke up at 4:00 in the morning to travel to Singapore.

Phoenix Team Kenya - 6th Day

Today started a little later than usual and went for a calm breakfast. The rest of the knock out competition took place and then we had an award ceremony rehearsal although we did not get to know who had won any of the awards.

The evening was a incredible moment in our lives and our time here. After collecting our participation medal, we were short listed for the Adversity Award. A trophy for those teams that despite all the difficulties that they faced, they persevered seeking success.
It was amazing but we would like to give thanks to all those in the competition for their support and encouragement. We have felt very welcomed and we hope to come back again, this time with a faster car!!

Final competition results:
  • Team Unitus 3rd
  • Team Betagreen 2nd
  • WORLD CHAMPIONS Pentagliders

Phoenix Team Kenya - 5th Day

Today it was time for reaction time and knock out races. We also had to give a presentation about our project as well as see the judges for scrutineering of our car measurements. We were complimented in our presentation and all the work we had done although we did miss a number of rules, particularly to do with the wheels and wheel area.

Clive did feel the tension of being the man at the controls of the reaction time clicker. He achieved a best time of 1.5 secs but we did not manage to get through this stage as our car lost on the over all time. Just to remind you, our car was only 0.09 secs slower than the next car and most cars were very close to each other in time so not bad for our Kenyan car.

Phoenix Team Kenya - 4th Day

Today was the day we had been waiting, actually, for not so long!! The Grand Opening Ceremony for the Malaysia 2011 F1inSchools World Finals took place in the ballroom of the Hilton in Kuala Lumpur. The speed races started and our one fear became very real. Would our car finish the race? Would we have to push it to the finish line?? To our delight and also surprise, our car put in a great top time of 0.27 secs as the best of our 4 races. Our nearest competitor was 0.09 secs away so we felt happy and satisfied with our effort for this year. Like many starting F1 teams, the focus of the first year is to finish races. We will be looking at moving up the rankings next years as our evolution and research takes us further in our manufacturing.

A great day for Phoenix Team Kenya.

Phoenix Team Kenya - 3rd Day

Today we woke up early to go to the Sepang International Curcuit in Kuala Lumpur where we had a tour of the facilities. We went round the track on our bus but not as fast as some of us wanted!! We had lunch with other teams and exchanged presents. It was a good chance to relax before the start of the competition. And Mr Lopez sent us to bed early so that we could be rested and ready for the morning.

Phoenix Team Kenya - 2nd Day

The day started out when the four of us were allowed to venture into the pilots cockpit on our way to Bahrain. We then had a tiring but relaxing long time at Bahrain waiting for our connecting flight. We tasted a bit of Malaysian food as part of one of the meals on the plane. I (Finlay) had chicken sweet and sour and the others had thai beef.
After a long journey, we jumped on a taxi to take us to the hotel where we will be resting in style. It is amazing what a good hot shower can do. We will report later on the full day 3. Mr Lopez just wants to add that he is very impressed with the amount of Maths work done while waiting at the airport.
